Teaching in Practice: Grammar - Unit 1

It's Daniela; I'm back for another class on TESL.  This time it's grammar.  What can I say about grammar?  I keep thinking how in the world did I ever learn grammar?!  I try to remember from my elementary days however I can't.  It was so long ago however I know I was not the best at spelling.  As I became an adult my punctuation and spelling improved.  This course would be a great fresher for me so in end I can teach the grammar for ESL students

Below are 2 sources that I believe to find useful and why.Top of Form

The first one I chose is a site has a glossary that provides definitions and explanations of English grammar terms. Personally I believe this site provides detailed information as well as examples.  What is an adjective, verb, noun, preposition?  Check out the link below to find out.

The second link I chose was IXL English language art.  This site helps learners develop the grammar communication skills needed for success not only in school but in life.  This site has learning activities to help students.  It does say it's for pre-k to grade 12 but this can be used for adults wanting to learn as well.

My reflection on unit 1 so far is that grammar is very important.  It helps when writing show expressions and also helps the reader understand what the writer is trying to relay.  I did the grammar quiz and well I need some work as well.  I look forward to the next few chapters and expanding my learning as well.

Grammar Activities:

I'd use a handout if in person or if it's virtual learning I'd send out the handout.  I would explain out loud what the assignment is about followed by an example.

My second assignment would be the following.  I'd do the same; explain the hand out followed by an example.  I would than select a student to read out the paragraph with the correct Noun or Verb.

My final grammar activity would be one that I would create.  It would involve singular words transformed into plural.  I would have 2 piles of cue cards.  One pile with the singular word...example: Family and another pile with the plural form but only the ending, example: ies, es, and s.  The cards are distributed to each student and they are to put the singular card down and apply the plural form on top of where they believe the ending should be to make the singular plural.  I would be walking around the classroom to see how the student's are doing.  This will also help me gain understanding if the student's comprehension.
