Teaching in Practice: Grammar - Unit 3

Another week and another unit completed.  What can I say about this unit 3's Corrective Feedback and Assessment in Writing?  Oh my there is a lot of information in my opinion.

We had to complete a writing activity.  I chose a worksheet on verb tenses of present, past and future.  It was a fill in the blank and would be done as a class activity.  I thought this was a good way for the students to practice not only their writing but their speaking at the same time.  I also learned that there was many ways of giving feedback to students.  I grew up with the teacher using red pen and yes, red pen can be daunting if you see a lot of it when you get your assignment back but I feel it's also a learning curve.  The red doesn't mean it's all negative, there can be positive feedback on the sheet as well.  If I were teaching young students I would also use the start stickers as I remember getting those as a kid.  It was a fun and exciting way of getting feedback.  I think it's important to give students feedback if they have error's as that is the way to learn from our mistakes.  In this unit we also completed a big assignment as part of our grade. Right after I read the scenario I knew that I would take the Inductive approach to teaching. This assignment was a bit hard because I kept changing my worksheets that I would have the students do.  I found one that I thought would be fun and keep the students engaged since we know that is important.  We want students to feel that learning is fun and for them to have a good time rather than be bored and not want to learn.  After reaching out to my PLN I made some revisions to what I would and would not do.  I did come across an interesting scenario when reaching out to my PLN's.  A PLN who is an ESL instructor suggested to leave out the contractions.  She brought up a valid point that it may be too difficult for the students since they are already struggling.  Another PLN after I said another instructor suggested to avoid it said no, it should be taught.  I had already submitted by assignment but now I'm thinking well...would I teach it or not?  Both are professional ESL instructors.  Which one do I listen to?  I'm learning more towards just seeing where the students are at.  I guess I won't really know what to do unless I'm put in that scenario myself.

In conclusion this unit was filled with lots of new information.  Hopefully I can retain it all but I do know that as time goes on it will all make sense and become easier.

Some great links to what I used for my assignment and research in this unit.
