Units 6-10..My thoughts

After reading these chapters I thought to myself there's a lot of work that needs to be done when teaching ESL.  So many elements and assessments.  I still find a lot of it hard, too bad this class is offered only online as it would be beneficial for it to be an in-class course.  I've never used a lot of the technology programs that are required.  It's understandable that everyone is busy but I personally found it challenging.  My favorite unit from these submission was unit 9.  When I imagine what my class would be like I see the students enjoying learning English and happy to be there.  That being said I do know there is a lot of work involved.  To be honest I know there's a possibility that I will not do well and will need to repeat the course.  If I do it is definitely a lesson learned.

Needs Assessment

Here is how I envisioned a needs assessment in my class.

 

I find that getting to know your class is very important.  Learning a new language can be scary and intimidating at times but those classmates and educator can help with that fear.  I've never taught an ESL class before or been part of one however I did grow up in an ESL home.  When I do become an educator the first step I would do is contact the students and ask them to bring a photo of themselves or their family (which ever they prefer) for the first class.   We would start off by What is my name?, Where am I from?, How long I've been in Canada?, and something they are interested in.  By doing this I could assess what level they are in the English language.  This also helps meet their fellow students and learn about them.  Before the end of the class I would have them post their picture up on a wall that is labeled as "Our Class".  My thoughts is that this would help for future classes.   Having a map and showing where everyone is from.  Under their pictures eventually adding a list of new things they experienced in their country to help with their written skills.

	Name: Lina Morelli Age: 42 Newcomer to Canada Originally from Italy. Lived in Naples Italy for 10 years followed by 32 years in Germany. Single mom of 2 children who Loves cooking but wants to provide a better life for her 2 kids.   Lina worked as a Nurses aid at Martin Luther Hospital in Berlin.  She is now working as an office Cleaner in Toronto.
Education and Experience	Fluent in Italian and German.  Has no university
English Language Proficiency	Beginner level – Reading, Writing and Speaking
Digital Skills	Minimal computer skills. Has a cell phone and uses it to call her children
Learning Strategies	Enjoys learning and it eager to Learn
Cultural Considerations	Usually only works part time
Motivation and Desires	Would like to English to be able to help her children with homework and to be able to meet the requirements to be a CT Scan technician in Canada
Goals and Expectations	Learn to read and write independently
Obstacles to Success	Irregular attendance due to work and childcare.  May not ask for help as Lina has done things on her own for a long time.
Unique Assets	Friendly and quiet and tries to use English whenever possible

Analysis:

Lina is willing to learn and with the can-do attitude could be able to succeed in the program.  She does however pose some issues with her attendance which can result in not learning as fast as she would like.  In planning her lessons, I would start off with the basics and since she is not able to attend all classes provide her with homework.  This would include reading magazines, easy read books and watching TV to help hear the English words.  I’d recommend that we have one on one time and have her show me what she read and explain to me her understanding. 

Persona 2

	Name:  Claudia Lars Age: 24 Newcomer to Canada, arrived 3 months ago.  Originally from El Salvador.  Lived in the gated community of Santa Tecla with her parents, brother.  She is currently living with a friend from back home who moved 6 years ago.  She has a passion for music, movies and fashion.  Plans to attend the Wilson School of Design at Kwantlen Polytech University in Richmond BC to become a Costume designer.  She currently works at the retail store Banana Republic as a Sales Associate and as a Server at Original Joe’s
Education and Experience	Completed High School
English Language Proficiency	Beginner level in reading, writing and speaking English
Digital Skills	Advanced in Computers and with Smart Phones
Learning Strategies	Will require minimal guidance

Analysis:

Claudia is eager to be at an advanced level in the English language.  Since she is so advanced with her digital skills my lesson plan for her would be based off the web.  Getting her to read articles out loud to enhance her speaking.  Watch video’s so she can listen to word pronunciations as well as read assigned books and have her work an assignment to help with her writing skills. 

I believe with Claudia’s motivation to learn she will be successful with the English language.  Her 2 jobs will be beneficial but can also be a down fall as she cannot attend as many classes.

Persona 3

	Name: Yash Singh Age: 9 Moved to Canada 2 weeks ago with his family from Pune India.  He lives in Saskatoon Saskatchewan with his Father Bhagyesh while his Mother Bhakti, his brother Raj are still back in India.  His father is Heart surgeon and the rest of the family will be joining after Raj has graduated in the spring.  The family will become Canadian Citizens once they are reunited.  Even though his father speaks Intermediate English only Punjabi was spoken at home
Education and Experience	Moved ½ way thru his 4th grade year and has never been in an English -speaking class
English Language Proficiency	Very basic in all fields
Digital Skills	Advanced in all area’s
Learning Strategies	Will require attention and guidance from the Teacher
Cultural Considerations	Extremely family oriented
Motivation and Desires	Wants to be able to communicate to make new friends

Analysis:

Yash is a quick smart learner who will not have issues picking up the skills required.  He may struggle in the sense that his is extremely home sick.  My lesson plan for him would be different from the rest of the students in his class.  Since he is in the 4^th grade my suggestion to his father would be for tutoring with myself after school each day.  We would start off with the basics as in the alphabet and most common phrases like my name is, where I’m from and his hobbies.  Knowing what his hobbies are I would be able to pair him up with someone in the class who has the same interests.  In our tutoring session we would play games that can help him associate letters to items or words.  Making the sessions fun for Yash will eventually help him with his shyness and feel more confident about himself.

Persona 4

	Name:  Mohammed Abdul Age: 47 Newcomer to Canada, arrived 1 year ago from Afghanistan.  He was born and raised in Kandahar where he met his wife and had 2 daughters.  Mohammed moved to Canada as he was sponsored by his brother who wanted to show him what he can provide for his children. His brother also plans to sponsor his wife and daughters to help provide a safer upbringing.  Currently he is working with his brother’s friend who speaks to him in Arabic
Education and Experience	Fluent in speaking Pashto and Arabic.  Attended school and graduated
English Language Proficiency	Speaks very little English, has no reading or writing skills
Digital Skills	None
Learning Strategies	Will require extensive one on one learning from the Instructor
Cultural Considerations	Male dominate
Motivation and Desires	He wants to be part of the Canadian culture and bring his family over to start their new lives together
Goals and Expectations	To become a beginner level in the English language
Obstacles to Success	Very scared as he’s in a new country.  Wants to learn quickly to help get a better paying job to support the sponsorship of his family

Analysis:

Mohammed’s experience with being fluent in 2 languages proves that he can learn another language.  He proves to show that he knows that learning English is very important for him to obtain his goal of providing for his family.   Since he learned his 2^nd language in school he will not pose an uncomfortableness in a group setting.  His fears however of being in another country where his familiar languages are not primary may be a struggle.

His lesson plan would be to teach him from a basic level.  Learning the alphabet and how to write it and repeating after the instructor.  Reading books at an entry level and for writing skills I’d write words on the board and have them write it and repeat after me.  He has a long road ahead of him however I feel he will be successful and will be on his way to learn his 3^rd language.

Unit 1-5

I’ve almost completed units 1-5 in TESL program at the UofM and all I have to say is wow.  I was not ready for the amount of intense work that is required in this program.  I’ve spoken with friends who have taken the TOFL course in other countries and it was a 4 week program.  I am enjoying the priogram and I’m learning lots of how teaching English actually came into play.  Am I confused?  ABSOLUTELY LOL.  I don’t remember grammar being so confusing when I was in school learning. I also thought to myself, how did I actually learn grammar? Years ago I took HR courses at the U of M and I have to say this program and that one are at 2 different levels.   Personally I struggled in the last few weeks.  I didn’t know how to prioritize everything that I needed to get done for this program along with living life.  I need to find more of a balance and put this as a priority.  Teaching English to kids is something that I want to do as I still have over 30+ years left of working.

My thoughts on Chapter 1-5 of Teaching by Principles

I read a few chapters in the Teaching by Principles textbook for my ESL class.  The main topic in Chapter 1 brought us into the world of what it would be like entering an ESL class for the first time.  It explained step by step of how the teacher approached her students and her lesson plan.  She started off by speaking to her students about her weekend while she took attendance.  I personally feel that she should have included her students in this process.  By calling out there names this would help the students be involved and break the ice.  I understand why she did it though as it can save time and she can see who’s participating on their own.  I agreed with the way she had her lesson plan and how it was presented.  The only difference I would chance when doing a lesson would be to make sure students hear the next week’s assignments and not tell them when they are getting ready to leave.
