Well today is the day that I completed my last assignment for my grammar class. I truly thought it was going to be hard. After doing some research I realized online has lots of materials to help. This class was enjoyable and I wasn't afraid to post and have my fellow students review my work.
I got to create my first grammar lesson plan. Could I say I was 100% pleased with it? No, I know I could have done better. I just wanted to make sure that I was able to get it in on time and not be late. I already have idea's how I would format my next lesson plan. I've included my lesson plan for everyone to see.
Until next time.....
Teaching English as a Second Language Lesson Plan
Date: December 20, 2020
Level: Beginner - 6 Adults using the Inductive approach
Time: 1.5 hours
Materials: Smart Board, White Board, markers, Charade cards, Worksheets
Objective
- To get students to understand what is an action verb and to use it in a sentence
Presentation (20 Minutes)
- Let students know that we are going to learn about action verbs today
- Play YouTube video for students to introduce what are action verbs. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q2gCrABrj_U
- Once video is done repeat to the class that an action verb is a word that describes an action
- Give class a few examples, writing on white board and engaging them for more. This will help provide a scale to see where the students are on this subject
Practice (60 – 70 Minutes)
- Charades (10-15 minutes)
o Each class member needs to come up to the front one at a time. They pick a card from the pile and they are to act out the action verb that is on the card. Each card will also have a picture to help the student.
Students are to guess and when they get it correct the class is asked if anyone can say what pronoun is plus the action verb. Example: She is swimming
- Worksheet #1 – Crossword puzzle (10 minutes)
o Each student will get a copy of the worksheet. They are asked to read out loud with me the 7 action verbs listed on the left side of the page. An example is shown on the white board that the words can be in any direction. It’s drawn by showing a line with arrows in the direction. We will go over the next section where they use the 7 action verbs to fill in the blank. We will go over the first one together to help them get started.
- Worksheet #2 (15 minutes)
o Exercise A and B
§ Students are handed another worksheet, this time they are to work with a partner for exercises A and B. In exercise A the students are made aware that they must take the action verb on the left column and match it with the pictures on the right. Students are told each action verb can only be used once. In exercise B the students are explained that they are to fill in the blank using the action verbs from exercise A. To help, we will go over the first one together so they have an example. They are reminded to only complete those 2 exercises. They are told they will get the next 12-15 minutes to complete the work. I will be walking around and listening to the students to see if they need help.
· Once the 15 minutes are up if the students have not done so already they’ll be asked to go back to their desks.
o Exercise C (10 minutes)
§ Read Mary’s daily routine for the students. Explain to them that we now need to read it again and circle the action verb that Mary’s using in her daily routine. I will start off reading the first sentence and asking the class if they know what the action verb is in the sentence. If they know it that’s great, if they aren’t sure I’d ask them to guess and possibly give a hint. After the first sentence is read I’ll ask each student to read a sentence. We will pick out the action verbs as a class for each sentence.
Practice (15 – 20 minutes)
o Exercise D
§ Now it’s the students turn. They are to complete this section on their own as to what their daily routine is. They are to include what action verb best describes the action they are performing.
§ Depending on time each student will be called on to read out loud what they wrote for their daily routine.
Homework
o Students are given a crossword handout to complete as homework
