I'm looking at this from a student point of view with a small portion from a teacher since I've never taught before. Personally I like to know when I made mistakes. My motto is we are only human and mistakes are okay as this is how we learn from them. Being a person who likes feedback on my work as a instructor I would provide my students with feedback. I'm okay with teachers using the "red" pen to do my corrections and will most likely be that teacher that uses it when marking assignments. Why you ask? I'm a bit OCD and I find that the red ink goes well with the blue or black ink.
My preference would depend on the level the students are at. For beginners I would do corrections but keep it more on a positive note. I would not be so detailed in marking up the sheet but still give feedback on spelling errors and punctuation. Letting the students know they did a good job but keep in mind what each student needs improvement on. For students at an intermediate level I would still provide positive feedback, show the corrections of the errors and respond to their work. At this stage I feel that it would still be appropriate that students not be marked by the letter grade. Advanced level students should receive feedback the same as intermediate students but more detailed. By this level they should have the proper understanding not only of spelling but also the correct use of verbs, pronouns, and the 16 tenses. For these students I would use the letter grade format when grading their work.
I personally do not have any experience at a teaching level. A few years ago, I was in Italy and my cousin who is an ESL teacher their had to grade papers. I helped her by marking some worksheets where the the students.
Those students that really want to learn will want their work corrected. There will always be those shy students who don't but by learning their error's it will help them succeed.
